Mr. Raleigh Johnson was spouse of the late Sarah Lucy Britt Johnson and was born and grew up near Newsoms, Virginia in Southampton County. His parents were James Henry Johnson and Nannie Bett Storey Johnson and he had, also, been predeceased by a sister, Hazel Johnson Fletcher and brother, Edward James Johnson.

A member of Murfreesboro Baptist Church, Mr. Johnson served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and was retired from Union Camp Corporation Pipe and Plant Maintenance Systems. He was a member of the American Checker Federation becoming National Checker Champion after having won numerous state tournaments.

He is survived by daughters, Norma J. Johnson and husband, Charles, and Wendy Johnson Marks, all of Murfreesboro; 3 grandchildren, Sherry Outland Pridgen and husband Gray, of Beaufort, Kevin Lee Outland and wife, Kathy, of Aulander, and Sarah Brittney Rose of Murfreesboro; 5 great grandchildren, Kelly Nicole Thagard and Michael Preston Thagard of Beaufort, William Thomas Lewter, Jr. and wife, Emily of Dunnellon, Florida; Kristin Brooke Outland and Katelin Leigh Outland of Aulander; and 1 great-great granddaughter, Autumn Elyce Lewter of Dunnelan, Fla; 3 step grandchildren and 7 step great grandchildren.

A Visitation will be held Friday, August 22, 2014 from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., 605 West Main Street, Conway, NC and a Funeral Service for Mr. Johnson will be on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 3:00 P.M. in Murfreesboro Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, NC with Rev. Lee Canipe presiding.  Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Murfreesboro.  Anyone wishing to share a Memorial Gift, please do so to Hertford/Gates County Relay for Life or Murfreesboro Baptist Church.

MURFREESBORO — Sarah Lucy Britt Johnson, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie after a lengthy illness.  

She was preceded in death by her parents, Maude Garris and James Lemuel Britt; a sister, Evelyn Chitty; her brothers, Southgate Britt and James Britt; and a niece that she raised, Lois Chitty Hardison.

A native of Murfreesboro in Hertford County, she spent most of her life as a caregiver to her family but also worked with the Evans Company in Murfreesboro as their bookkeeper for many years. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother raising two daughters and a niece. Everyone loved coming to her table to enjoy her wonderful Southern cooking.

Survivors include her loving and devoted husband of 66 years, Raleigh Eldridge Johnson, of their home; two daughters, Norma Johnson Johnson and her husband, Charles, and Wendy Johnson Marks, of Murfreesboro; three grandchildren, Sherry Outland Pridgen and her husband, Gray, of Beaufort, Kevin Lee Outland and his wife, Kathy, of Aulander, and Sarah Brittney Rose, of Queens University of Charlotte;  five great-grandchildren, William Thomas Lewter, Kelly Thagard Smith and her husband, Gregory, Michael Preston Thagard, Kristin Brooke Outland and Kaitlin Leigh Outland; three stepgrandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren.  

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., today, Jan. 6, at Bridgers Funeral Home Inc. in Conway, which is handling the arrangements.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 7, at Murfreesboro Baptist Church, with Dr. Lee Canipe presiding. Burial will follow in the Town of Murfreesboro Cemetery. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Murfreesboro Baptist Church, where Mrs. Johnson had been a lifetime member.
